Penal code

The Night City Municipal Code, Title 9: crimes and penalties.

Version 1, updated History

The Night City Municipal Code, Title 9: crimes and penalties. Enforced on the street by the Night City Police Department, argued by counsel and decided by the Night City Court. Ignorance of the code is no defence.

How sentences work

  • Infractions are settled with a fine on the spot. No arrest.
  • Misdemeanours carry a fine and may carry a short stay in a cell.
  • Felonies carry a fine and cell time. The suspect is cuffed, searched and booked at NCPD Headquarters.
  • Capital felonies go before the Night City Court. Only the court may sentence a citizen to death, and only after a trial.
  • Charges add up. A single booking holds a citizen for at most 120 minutes; time above that is set aside unless the court orders otherwise.
  • An officer may lower a fine or cell time for cooperation, a first offence or a plea. Raising a penalty above this code takes the court.
  • Contraband is seized and destroyed at booking.

Rights of the accused

  • You have the right to remain silent, and the right to know the charges against you before you are booked.
  • You have the right to counsel. A lawyer may be called; the officer must allow a reasonable wait.
  • You may not be held cuffed for more than 30 minutes without being charged or released.
  • You may refuse a fine. A refused or unpaid fine becomes a level 1 warrant and the case goes to the precinct.
  • Every booking, fine, seizure and release goes on your criminal record, which you may ask to read at the precinct.

  • The court may order cell time above a single booking, served over several bookings, and fines up to 100,000 €$.
  • For a capital felony the court may sentence the accused to death. The sentence is final for the character and is carried out under staff oversight.
